About The International Military Music Society

Worldwide Organisation

The International Military Music Society (IMMS) was founded in 1977 and is a worldwide organization for people who direct, play in, are associated with or are simply interested in and enjoy military bands, their music and history.

Objectives of the IMMS

The encouraging of interest in all areas of military music (brass, concert, tattoos, symphonic, pipes, percussion, ensembles, etc.) of the world including published music, recordings, history, traditions, instrumentation and uniforms.
The promotion of research in those areas.
To provide world-wide means of communication between members interested in those aspects and studies and to exchange information.

The IMMS unites not only friends, for which military music is a hobby, but also those who are professionally involved, such as conductors, musicians and composers.

Activities

IMMS offers as its activities:

The production of a magazine called “Band International” three times a year, which contains photos, reports, features, historical articles, reviews, discography and general news.
The organization of international meetings for its members in combination with military music festivals or concerts; recent ones were in: Shrewsbury-UK (2002), Ystad-Sweden (2005), Heerlen-The Netherlands (2006) and Krakow-Poland (2007).
The further development of its website www.imms-online.org.
Special projects, for instance CD-productions.

The IMMS has Branches or National Representatives in: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, USA.

Most of those National Branches organize their own activities, often produce their own Newsletter or Magazine and maintain their own website.

In canada we produce a newsletter letter 4 times each year.

The number of members is continuously increasing and new countries are joining the IMMS, which guarantees a future full of interesting activities.
